　　机器人乔尼五号做着与其他机器人，比如终结者、变形金刚、机械战警，完全不同的事。

　　乔尼五号不是想统治地球的机器魔王，也不是任由人类摆布的机器奴隶。他拒绝承认自己是一种物品，甚至机器。他大声宣布“我也是一种生命”，渴望人类接纳他。他努力向人类学习，并在各方面向人类靠近。为此他穿上衣服，还上教堂向神父询问灵魂的奥秘。

　　乔尼五号天真善良，乐于助人，不谙世事，仿佛孩童。他全力帮助设计者本杰明生产玩具，还帮他谈恋爱。这一点也使他特别容易为坏人利用。起初是帮小偷“拿”轿车里的音响，后来是帮奥斯卡“取出”银行金库里的钻石，还被奥斯卡一伙打得半死。但是，当他明白成了坏蛋的帮凶后，他就象所有的人类英雄一样，冒着生命危险，将罪犯逮捕归案。最终乔尼五号也被美国政府所接受，成为一位美国公民。

　　乔尼五号让我们看到人与机器人的另一种关系：朋友。

　　乔尼五号正是人类想要的机器人类型：聪明、善良但外表脆弱。他与人类的关系是平等的，不存在谁奴役谁，谁统治谁的问题，是互相帮助互惠互利的朋友。
