　　故事的主人公吉姆的一生似乎只在为一个失误活着，为另一个失误去死，实际上，他一生只犯了一个刻骨铭心的错误，本能的一跳。在这本能的一跳之前，他在帕特纳号一做大副，年轻有为，雄心勃勃，决心在这个世界上混出个模样。在一次远舫中，满载一船香客的帕特纳号将要深没时，他对以船长为首的船上的官员不顾乘客性命，拼命去争夺有限的几只救生艇的行为，极为鄙视，不屑和他们为伍。他决意和一船乘客共患难。但是，在最后的关键时刻，他被恐惧和混乱吓破了胆，那致命的一跳在本能的驱使下终于发生；他到底还是跳到了他曾经厌恶过的同伴中。但帕特纳号并没有沉没有责任感的丑闻人物，法庭因此判他们失职罪，没收到航海证件。吉姆为逃避舆论，从一地躲到另一地，最后和一群几乎与世隔绝的土著人和睦相处，赢得尊敬，成为“爷”；但在正得意时，他以犯下错误，引咎请罪，演出一幕悲剧。
