1963年,密西西比州的民权运动领袖麦格艾维斯,在自家的车道上被谋杀,凶手是白人种族主义者布莱恩柏克伍斯,但是他却无罪释放,逍遥法外30年,正义在经过30年之后才出现一线曙光,这是否会太晚了呢?当年麦格被谋杀后,所以有力的证据都指出布莱恩是凶手,但是全由白人组成的陪审团二度无罪释放他。30年后,一位年轻的地方检察官巴比,决定重新审理这个看人以毫无胜算的案子,他在麦格遗孀玛丽艾维斯的帮助下,收集了足够的新证据后,对凶手进行第三次的起诉,最后终于使正义伸张。
